Saying I love you in Vietnamese is tricky in more ways than one. Saying I love you in French or English, just to name two examples, is the same whether it’s spoken by John or Dominique.

But in Vietnamese the phrase changes, depending on if the speaker is male or female.

A man saying I love you to a woman would say, Anh yêu em. This is pronounced ah-n eew am. Whereas, a woman saying I love you to a man would say, Em yêu anh. This is pronounced am eew ah-n.

Between friends one way to say it would be tôi yêu bạn, pronounced th-oi eew ban.
